1. The 45 classes
Classes 1–34 cover goods and classes 35–45 cover services. The correct class depends on the actual nature and intended use of the specific goods or service, not on the applicant’s industry or company name.
2. Similar groups and standard names
CNIPA organizes each class into similar groups and publishes standard item names in the Similar Goods and Services Classification. A filing should identify the specific item name; class titles, notes, similar-group numbers and item codes are not themselves valid item names.
3. How to choose the right class
For goods, consider function, primary use, material and whether the item is a component or dedicated container. For services, consider the industry, purpose, content, method and recipient. Compare the class title, notes and the closest standard item when the answer is not obvious.
4. Standard and custom item names
Use current standard names whenever possible. A custom name should clearly describe one specific good or service, avoid vague or promotional wording, and follow the classification and naming principles effective on the filing date.
5. Version and official confirmation
The Nice Classification and China’s Similar Goods and Services Classification are revised periodically. Always verify the version and official notices effective on the filing date. This guide is a navigation aid and does not replace the official text or a case-specific review.
